Pine forest. kilometers of it...

Postby kayokay » Sat Mar 26, 2011 2:36 pm

Will I ever see chickens? I have been walking for hours and haven't found a single spot of grassland except the one where I built my house, and it's not even that big. :(
Is ;y spot a bad one?

This is a well known bug. You need to save up for swimming and then find a nearby river. Once you go in deep enough, problem solved.

Chickens are a common spawn so there's a very good chance you'll find them with just a little bit of luck. I'm assuming you're attempting to find your first bones to craft a saw with? If this is the case and you really just can't find any grassland/heath/moor, then settle for rabbits and stay safe.
If you're looking for chickens to breed them, make sure you have a chicken coop before hand or can construct one relatively soon after catching the chickens or they'll despawn if left on the ground or starve to death if left in your inventory/containers.

If you have farming, you can plant grass to create artificial grassland. You can also just deforest an area to cause grassland to naturally begin to spread.

Heck I can deforest faster than light, would it take oo long for the grassland to appear?

It's variable. You'll begin to see grassland sprawl anywhere from a few hours later to a few days later if you chop down a few trees. A sufficiently large area should begin to generate grassland fairly quickly by merit of probability alone.

But don't clear too many trees, or else you may start having trouble getting wood quickly.

I thought forest area spread into grassland not the other way. And if you plant a tile of grass does it count as grass land or is it still part of forest area.

The only way to get a forest tile is by planting a tree and sometimes it will convert the tile it's on into its native tile. Besides that, forests degrade into grassland if they lack trees. Plowed grassland can degrade into moor. Plowed moor can degrade into Heath. Moor spreads on Grassland. Heath spreads on Moor and Grassland.

Yes, planting grass tiles make that tile count entirely as grassland.
