Minehole destruction?

Can mineholes be destroyed? if they can i assume the cave ground below would remain, but the hole and ladder itself would be gone to end the passage upward right?

How close together can they be placed? Imagining some horribly elaborate vault built using alternating mineholes.

I think they need to be ~8 tiles apart. There are much better ways to build hearthvaults.
