How do I mine?

I have found a hole in a cliff and when I enter it, it is just pitch black and shows just the cave entrance. I tried using the mine tool but nothing worked, what am I doing wrong?

Please use the search function, these questions have been asked a lot. You need to go in deeper to the cave before you can mine the walls. You cannot mine within a certain distance of the entrance.

You will need a pickaxe or stoneaxe equipped to mine and the speed and capability to which you mine is based on your equipment quality and your strength.

It is pitch black even with a torch, my friend says it is a bug is this true?

Also we can't walk anywhere but the cave entrance, and we are not stuck, we tried 1 at a time with an axe and a torch.

I found a cave like this as well, you can't do anything with it... probably the only reason it wasn't claimed yet.

It is a bugged cave, yes. It is literally 1 tile large and can't be mined. You will need to go elsewhere.
