is it possible for caves to have more than one type of ore? Particulary big sprawing ones?

As I understand it, a cave is a naturally open area of the underground. In truth, there's a whole world under the surface, the area of caves and mines. A cave or mine doesn't make a "pocket region" like a dungeon in an MMO, but instead connects to the underground level. Since this level is crisscrossed with ore veins and clusters, it's very easy to get multiple ores in one mine.

Also, if I read the forums right, there's actually another level (or more?) under this, when you build a mine shaft inside a mine, it takes you one layer deeper!

Correct, and I believe it goes 10 levels deep if I recall correctly. (I could be mistaken and it's only 5.)

Yes. It needs to be paved first, but no need to have minerals there, however, it'd be good to know which direction to start mining from your starting point.

Yes, absolutely. However, refer to the point above.

Once you find ore, you can smelt a bar. Turn the bar into nuggets. Take two nuggets and some blocks with you and build a support like any other furniture or container item. Make sure you don't mine outside of the supports radius or you have a greater chance of a cave in.

Any other questions? :)

No.
While this was true in World 3, where you needed to prospect to locate a mine and it would start a minehole for you when you found one, this is no longer true for World 4 and 5, where you may build a minehole where ever you'd like.

except that you still have to find a vein with prospecting or build a useless mine.
