Question about mine supports

Nice and simple: Can they break on their own?

I'm a very inexperienced miner, only just started having a crack at it in this world, and I've had supports disappear on me twice now. I was under the impression that they were safe once placed. The only other option is some scoundrel managed to get inside my mine before I sealed it and is playing tricks on me while I nap.

Is there any particular reason for breaking them? It looks to be insanely dangerous with the amount of debris it left, and they are easily replaced.

They don't arbitrarily spawn and break things. They appear when you finish mining out a tile. After you mine out several thousands of tiles is more accurate. They also despawn like anything else if no one is around watching them.

Oh well, looks like I'll have to keep a closer eye on my cave.
