Prospecting broken?

Postby Redell » Mon Apr 04, 2011 5:19 am

So I've been trying to prospect for awhile now using Q40-Q60 rustroot extract, and I can't seem to figure out how all this prospecting BS goes down.
I can be in one spot and the indicator says it's in one direction, I'll take a step (1 tile far) and nothing is found. Here is an example:

So I moved a tile away and this happened:

The sign post is the tile where I was standing and had the first indicator.
So I decided "Ok maybe the tile above initial?"

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong....

Nothing. It's bugged.

On that note, would it be better to spam four prospecting attempts at one location, and hazard a guess onto how accurate it is? I'm a proud cave owner, and finding metal is tough... And it's not like rustroot is very plentiful to begin with.

Well, I have done that and it seems to yield the same results every time with the same Q extract....

Na, move around as much as possible and hope for the best.

Alright then. We already have a few readings of "<type> ore below!" If we actually got these readings, are they reliable and would a mine hole there actually be profitable?

I've had quite a bit of success with Enders client and prospecting. Once you figure out the directional quirks (like -90 is full East) it works quite well. I've found multiples of every metal type possible this world.

And as for rustroot, if you can get your E*P to 1k+ you'll never run out.

Here's my question, when building a mine hole on a prospected spot, what are the chances you wipe out the entire vein with the mine hole space? And thus, is it smarter to build the mine hole further from the prospected spot and mine into it?

Warped, could you please inform us ignorant country folk of how these little quirks work, and possibly update the wiki? Being given a pair of unusual numbers, really doesn't make sense.

I don't do wikis.

But to explain the quirk is easy.

It gives a number and a delta. I ignore the delta because I have no idea what 1 vs 5 means, but the numbers work like this (I want to stress I have no idea if this information is correct, just that when I've used it this way it has led me to an ore source. Is it the actual node source the numbers are indicating? How could I tell?):

Think of a Compass grid, now remember the game map skews to the right (North being Upper Right, etc.)

0 degrees is North
-45 is NE
-90 is East
-135 is SE
90 is West
45 is NW
135 is SW
and 179,-179 is South

When given a number you must attempt to gauge the best you can the direction of angle to be taken. This requires many multiple prospects and is not a convenient method for people with limited resources.

EDIT: For clarity. When I say the direction is EAST I mean your hearthling is WEST of the node.
