Buy foraging asap and get your exploration up; 11 is the minimum but you really want 20+ on your first or second day. Survival next. Boat making and yeomanry are vital if you want to survive. Forage everything, raid every ant hill, and read up on the forums/wiki to see what curios are good to strive for.

Grind cone cows while playing. They have a pretty good lp/hour and are easy to make for a new character.

Ant raiding, cone cows, bark boats. Basic hermit LP supply and it's not overly hard to get.

Emerald + the occasional Ruby dragonflies are excellent curios if you have a narrow swamp nearby.I can't be bothered to catch them unless it's narrow though, too much headache. Perhaps try following the edges of a swamp and looking for where the flies are going to hit shore or something?

Emeralds make me mad. I actually rather use toy chariots and the occasional ladybugs/wishbones/etc I find on my way.

Make sure you add blueberries to your diet to increase int which will allow you to add more curiosities.

Not just any fish--perch or roach. Pike has a small bit of int FEP to it. Of course, if you can get milk and make batter, any fish works to make fish sticks.
