Best Crop for feed.

Postby cloakblade » Sat Apr 09, 2011 7:45 am

I was thinking the other day what is the best crop to have for feed (for animals). I was thinking beets are a good candidate, about 5 small units / harvest and they grow faster than the average crop. What are other people's experiences I have not data to back up my claim so feel free to disagree.

pumpkin.
takes 6 times as long to grow but 17 feedable units(8 pumpkin flesh and 7 seeds.) leaving a seed for replanting. 99% sure pumpkin flesh is(still) usable as feed.

as opposed to what? 4 feedable units from beets?(are leaves feed?)

with 6 times faster growth time it means that in the same time you can get either 17 feedable units from pumpkin or 24 from beets. BUT you got to plant beets 6 times as often or you can increase the size of your pumpkin patch by a bit under 50%. get the same output but still 4 times less actual work.

carrots are stupid. no discussion.

Beet is the best choice cause if your animals are -5/+5 per gen, pumpkin wont be able to keep up with its -5/+2or3 per gen.

Carrots comes in 2nd.

Beet is best if you can actively farm/replant.

Pumpkin if you are the lazyman farmer and not bothering about HQ animals.

carrots give 2 units of feed for the same work and time as beets. you make a point about keeping up with q but for the love of whatever don't call carrots a good 2nd.

oh and id like to see you not be counting in time needed to produce feed when ya got a dozen or 2 pregnant cows to take care of(not there yet myself). not cool to call the pumpkin method lazy.

Its still 2nd best if u want HQ animals and somehow unable to get beet. Just bigger fields.

Carrots grow fastest, and therefore will be the best quality food for your cattle. They come at the price of lots of work.
Beetroots are slightly slower to grow, but they produce more food.
Pumpkins are very slow to grow (and will therefore be significantly lower in quality than carrots or beetroots) but they give a very large amount of food. Furthermore, since they're so long to grow they require minimal care.

I never had the occasion to see if food softcaps cattle or if it increases their quality, but these are definitely the 3 dominant options when it comes to feeding cattle.

Pumpkins are great for hermits that want to go full industry or just lazy people.

Dont forget most seeds works, so if you have excess seeds that are above the quality of your animals , you can also dump it into their feed as well.

^This is true

But it would also be benifical for the hermit to have a Farmer alt for some food farming if he decides to go full ind.
