Taming

Postby Jackwolf » Mon Apr 11, 2011 4:18 am

Now I've read through all the guides and tips and all the like that people have posted and linked throughout my time being here.

I've done things right thus far; Fenced up some Auroch with fires, left a corner open, call down the thunder, sidestep, sting like a bee, quell.

I started combat with another Auroch, and then switched back to my original like some other guides have shown me. Now, I have everything to quell once more. Thunder'd, Sidestepped, Bee'd, now it won't allow me to quell. Will I simply need to wait?

You messed up. You don't attack the previous one, you let it attack you. This takes 5-20 minutes, usually 10-11 though. When it "bucks" and aggros you again, then you can tame it again. If you start combat on an already-in-taming animal, then it ruins it and can sometimes make the animal un-tamable.

My advice, if you've still got the whole herd, would be to kill it with a ranged weapon and pick another one.

It's not untamable. You just have to wait for an arbitrarily long amount of time until it naturally reaggros on its own and you can quell it again.

Really? Every time I made this mistake (waited 20 minutes, and decided to go ahead and attack on my own) it bugged out or something and would never let me quell. It would never buck either, and I ended up standing by it and punching it to death. So, it's possible that it adds some absurd time limit to the bucking interval, but I've tamed whole creatures while another sat bugged like this.

This appears to be a bug, I believe. It happens sometimes even when you tame normally too. Sometimes it will even let you quell and not show a number when taming. I've managed to get to 240 Tameness with this bug before I just became entirely frustrated and butchered the entire herd. If this is the case, then sucks for you~

You almost had the right idea.

Once you complete your first taming cycle and the animal deaggros, gaining 20 tameness, I like to walk a screen or two away until the herd exits combat as well. then reapproach the herd and initiate combat with any auroch except the one you are taming. Then you can repeat your taming process. This should allow you to skip the waiting period.
I like to air dribble.

You shouldn't be able to reaggro the one you are trying to tame if you do disengage the rest of the herd.
