Realistically speaking, armor shouldn't be needed against an animal. If they break your defense bar, you either made a mistake or you were going to lose anyway. I did my first at 30 after penning it in to prevent running, that should work fine for you.

I thought you couldn't pin up foxes because they can break signs.

They only break things when pathing to you and stuff obstructs them. When fleeing they do not break things =)

Foxes don't break roundpole fences though. You can pen them and sling them down that way if you want actually. They also can't break signs if you're slinging from shallow water or a boat.
