They run faster than run, I'm not entirely sure they run full sprint speed or if you could outdistance them that way. Because of this, they are impossible to outrun or even keep up with on anything other than pavement.

TLDR; hope a boat's near

In w4 I lived on a nice patch of heath. I could aggro bears in the nearby and run back into my palisade and lock the door and kill them from safety. However, I only had a range of about 60-80 tiles before I would be pushing getting in the gate and locked before the bear caught me. (This wasn't counting the visual range of 40-60 tiles you can additionally shoot.)

Bears are most definitely faster than the player on any terrain, including paved land.

It still helps that they gain initiative before mangling you, though. My life has been saved several times which i later found out was them NOT "missing", but gaining init.

Also keep in mind, that while running you have no defense. A bear can one-shot a mobile hearthling, but if you stand still at -just- the right moment, it might deplete your defense bar and do 75% damage instead of insta-k.o. Still, you're much much better of in a boat or palisade, it's just that if worse comes to worse...
