How do I mine?

I'm supposed to be able to mine wherever I want right? I have an axe equipped, and when I select mine and left click a clear peice of ground nothing happens.. Can someone help me?

I'm guessing you're mining in a cave. There's an area of about 25 tiles radius (50 tiles? forget) that you cannot mine. Other than that, if you're mining an eligible spot, you will either go to work or get an error message.

I'm mining in an open spot in the forest. I did not see an error message either. I can't see why I can't mine, Do i need a lit torch?

You must be on layer 1. (Underground).

To get their find a cave entrance, or make a mine hole.

To make a mine hole you need prospecting, and have discovered blocks, boards, rope, leather, and hardened leather.

Realistically, if you're trying to mine the dirt with a stone axe you likely lack the materials to make a minehole and will for quite awhile. It is advisable to find a cave and utilize that if you desire to be a miner =)

Seems like I recall just a few short months ago a stone axe would be all one had (other than from trading) when a mine hole was built.

I do agree with finding a cave. With prospecting being a bit off right now, dropping a mine hole is unreliable and a big security risk.

u'd also need rustroot, to find a mining area, no? if ure not in a cave that is.
