Assembling raft

how do you assemble a raft?

You make 4 pieces and then pick one piece up, bring to another, pick up another one, drop into the one with 2 pieces, then drop the final piece into the one with 3 pieces. I hope that made sense

I think that that is wrong. I assembled one at my base ~1 minimap from any source of water

you can only move a fully assembled raft if it's on the water...

pick up one piece while you are holding another piece?

Pick up raft piece.
Place on water, preferably a flat stretch with no shore curving in nearby.
Pick up second piece.
Right click the first piece.
Repeat.

then you need to find a laarger area to assemble it in...i have no idea if it would work or you'll just lose your pieces, but you could try doing it in the middle of a lake i your boat

If the space for the raft is occupied, there's probably a tree or boat in the way. You also might be standing inside the place the raft should be. Rafts are pretty big.
