Hunter-to-be, looking for recommendations.

Postby Zeronine » Mon Apr 18, 2011 1:30 am

Hello people, I recently discovered this amazing game and was instantly taken in by it's sandbox world and politics.
I settled somewhere (I have yet to discover where on a map) with a couple of my RL mates and we've worked our way up in the world.

We've recently begun dividing specializations, and I got Hunting / exploration. Now to the question:

"My character is probably around 40k LP although unable to properly hunt dangerous animals with 13 MM and exp and most non-criminal non-incrementable skills. Any recommendations on what to do in this "dead-weight" period for a combat oriented character, I mostly feel like just waiting around for my curiosities to tick in, asides from gathering more curiosities of course."

So, sorry for rambling on and making an extremely long question.

TL:DR I'd like recommendations for activities for a to-be hunter untill I get a MM level high enough to actually properly kill stuff.

Thank you very much for any recommendations you might give. :)

Work on the things that prove useful to a hunter. Namely, you can work on trees. Bows, Ranger's Bows, and Arrows all use branches, and those come from trees planted by players. Start looking for high q clay, water, and dirt to grow your own, or start farming and mining to trade for someone else's. Alternatively, go the brawling style and get UA and practice on ants. Marksmanship is fine from boats, but when you want to really kill something, you gotta get in there with it.

Aside from that, do other things to help your community. Farm some land, build a palisade, explore for riches, make allies, etc. There's tons of non-specialized labor that could always be done.

You can hunt just fine, as long as you stay in your boat.

Been there, done that. Takes forever, but you can do it.

forget about growing trees, since you are dividing roles with your friends, let your farmer friend work with trees or youd end up growing low q trees UNLESS you can afford spending more lp on farm besides your true needs. (i would concentrate on UA/MM, exp, and survival if i have your role.)
but help your friends with locating/providing good resources, making friends to learn who are potential enermies or trading partners, on your exploring trip. (dont expect ppl inside walls to be too friendly to you when things are still rough. some may attack you only for going too close. ppl would never open gates for strangers.)

if going for MM, forget about bows untill you have high MM and stick with sling and boat for a while. as potjeh said above, you dont need high MM to take down bears as long as you are on a boat. be careful though, they can break your boat if you go too close, and some players may try chasing you too. (imo while your perception is low, bears are much easier than foxes because bears dont run away from your low average hits, it just takes longer.)

if going for UA, start learning how to fight with ants, read the combat guide, spar with other combat oriented friends to learn about moves and maneuvers and forget about beating boars and bears for a while.

usually more experienced forumers would give you better advice than me, but sometimes ppl are just busy or tired of typing the same things again and again to each individual. id recommend you read up more on the forums and wiki. there have been too many similar threads on how to lately and you may be able to dig the very info you are seeking.

Actually, most times I try to take on a bear, they run, and then when I chase they aggro me and run faster than me.

your MM/per/weapon ql should be high enough to let them run from you. let me know if your lvl is still as low as the just starting player and they still run. in that case, i could be wrong, though i doubt it.
