Indentifying hostile vs. peaceful villages

Postby SirScrotsScribe » Sun Apr 24, 2011 9:36 am

I'm planning on moving from my current location. Partially because this was just a temp spot, and partially because of the 3 huge villages that sprang up in a triangle surrounding me. I want to leave asap, I even have all the materials for 2 pali cornerposts for the new spot. The trouble is, I cant find a single river system that isn't occupied by at least one large village.

I would like to get away from people as much as possible so i don't have to watch my back so much while I hunt, constantly worry about getting raided, etc. It seems however, based on scouting and checking the map, that people are everywhere, and even popping up on places unseen by the map. Every river system has a large village or a city, or at least just a village claim somewhere on it that is presumably using it.

My Question Is How do i figure out if a village somewhere is hostile, or peaceful? Short of just boating out front of their wall and shaking my ass to see if they try to kill me. (seems kinda risky)

If there is a river system with just one village and they end up being peaceful farming or trading types, then i can set up shop. But it's not like i can just go ask them if they prefer chocolate or children's tears.

You basically answered your own question. Walk by the village and say hello. You have an equal chance of being either greeted or slain where you stand. Also, don't listen to any racial stereotypes like "all Russians are murderers." A lot of the people who play are in fact very helpful but also very suspicious of certain activities. For example: Don't turn on Criminal Activity to walk on someone's claim. Even if you're just walking through to the other side. WALK AROUND. It could save your life.

Also, if you want to get away from people, pick a direction and just keep walking. You'll eventually make your way to the outer grids, far away from the more-developed villages.

Good luck in your travels.

Yes this is the most effective way of keeping your main hearthling alive. Plus, a stranger in newbie clothing is less intimidating than someone wearing a bear cape, leather armor, etc.

I'm planning on moving farther inland, keep passers by at minimum. I just want to know if there is a less risky was of gauging weather or not a village is a threat to safety, or ignorable. Currently, all i can really do is play csi on the surrounding settlements. I found one river system that on the map had no villages but one a supergrid away and just a few random houses. Went there.... total Russian destruction everywhere.

Anyway, how would a diplomatic convo go? I cant really think of what i would say to a village to figure it out. Or just what i would say in general.

You can also look for scent, if they are scent everywhere in the super grid you wander in, it is a very bad sign.

Honestly its pretty hard to say before you settle in, sometime people are just very possessive and will do whatever to make you leave, sometime they will come friendly and help. Sometime i have walked to introduce myself to a neightboor and that brought me a lot of trouble. I don't think you can have a good idea before you settle in and at least few weeks passed. Sometime the poeple that will come to make trouble will become your best friend just because of a nice talk, really its hard to say, people are strange.

But overall i think scent are the only reliable factor here. At least you can spot the murderer/theif willages with that.

bear cape and leather armor is intimidating? the people that it is intimidating to are also the ones you don't have to worry about being a danger to you.

oh and scents are no good really. the towns you find them in are the victims usually, not the criminals. unless ya wanna bother tracking the scents back.

Doesn't matter who the victim was, when you think about it.
