newb question

I read the wiki about palisades. can someone please explain it better? how can one corner post make an entire square of wall? also where should I put it?

No, a roundpole fence. You could "practice" with that.

While building your palisade, you can place an additional cornerpost instead of a wall segment at any time (which just costs 30 blocks).
Since you can extend your wall into any direction(s) from a cornerpost, you can build all four sides with just one initial cornerpost if you are content with having only one gate.

Not sure what you mean, but your palisade probably should be large enough so that your houses aren't visible from the palisade walls (or more generally, your main working area).
That way, you don't have to take shelter in a house every time you want to go afk for a few minutes.

You need to place at least one wall/fence segment in before you can build another cornerpost.
