"Clearance" in mines?

Postby Zeronine » Thu Apr 28, 2011 1:13 pm

I'd like to make a palisade in a cave, ranging from one wall to another, but as soon as I start to pave any tiles x-tiles away from the walls, I get the message that I'm lacking cleareance, what is this? (I've found the spot far away from the entrance where I'm eligible to dig into the walls by the way). My knowledge of caves is lacking.

You can build a palisade on any mined tile. You cannot start a building within 2 tiles of any cave wall, but if you start it on a mined tile it's my impression you can extend it into the center of the cave.

If you build it purely on mined tiles, you don't have to worry about clearance at all. The issue is when you want to build anything on natural cave floor.

OP: What's the purpose of the palisade? Wall off a section for an underground village? Wall off a cave entrance? Other?

You must mine out the sections so that you can build across natural cave floor in the 'restricted clearance' areas. Just remember that if you can mine there, so can anyone else, so plan accordingly.

Kind of going on a bit of a tangent here: I'm not sure why this is still in the game. Back in w3 and earlier I can see it as a method to prevent anyone from "blocking" a cave with buildings, etc. However, with the ability to mine out around any constructions (except near a cave entrance), does it really serve a purpose now?

Honestly it is more of a hindrance. We got a brick wall in our cave against the unbuildable zone, but it's very awkward. Still, it get's the job done.

While we're at it, can you build a palisade or brick wall piece (i.e. not a cornerpost) on a non-paved cave tile?

No, walls must be built on paved tiles.
