How does fishing mechanics work these days?

Postby al » Tue May 03, 2011 4:51 am

I have never been a good fisher, though even in w4 I got more fish of different types than now without deepening into the details.

Is the wiki up-to-date on the subject? Are there any other factors (apart from moon, time of day and type of water) which define what type of fish do you get? Is there a factor of luck/randomness?

moon phase, time of day (day or night is the only factor I've seen), fishing location (lake or river, depth of water), bait and gear used, quality of it all.

fresh bait--worms, leeches, and intestines--always catch first try. lures take time, plus you have to use the 'right one'.

Also, see the w5 update. Fish nodes deplete much more quickly. You might be trying to fish an empty node that hasn't stopped animating.

Do these affect type of fish, or only quality of it?

Pole and string doesn't matter. The hook type can. As far as I can tell, it's the overall quality of the rig: pole, line, hook, and bait.

String matters.

I'm pretty sure different types of live bait produce different types of fish. And I also think that dawn and dusk could easily have different fish though I haven't spaded this much.
