Ore/Metal Quality and Mining.

Postby Gustyboy » Tue May 03, 2011 7:17 pm

Hi,

So, we have our mine now and we started to mine.
The wall hardeness was high, and we needed to raise the Strengh of our miner to mine.
I red on the wiki that the wall hardeness = metal quality in it.
And I red that wall hardeness = sqrt(str*toolQL).
We calculate that the wall hardeness is at least 48, but when we got our first ore, it was only Q10.
What we did wrong ?
Our miner is Full Industry, is wearing a bear cape + bear talisman, have a q31 stone axe, and was under wine buff + boar tusk snuff buff.
We stopped mining for now, just to be sure that we are not making a mistake somewhere.

Thanks a lot.

Ore/Stone quality and Wall hardness are completely unrelated node types. Ore comes in veins, hardness and quality come in circular nodes. Therefor finding a mineral vein that also happens to overlap a quality vein is a fairly uncommon event.

However, there is one link between hardness and quality rising together. Each level you go down the base hardness and quality goes up. I know for sure quality goes up by a base of 10 per level. I'm unsure if hardness only goes up by 10, or if it goes up by more than that. Hardness nodes tend to mess with your ability to know for sure on that one. Otherwise though, hardness and quality have nothing to do with each other.

Where on the wiki does it say that?

Wiki wrote: Mining Difficulty and Ore Quality

When mining, certain rock walls are harder than others. If you attempt to mine a wall that is too hard for you, you will get a message along the lines of "This wall is slightly/far/much/very much too hard for you to mine". The hardness of a wall appears to be equal to the quality of ore and stone you receive from mining it. In order to mine a wall, you appear to need sqrt(Strength * Tool_Quality) >= Wall_Hardness. For example, in order to mine a quality 10 rock wall with a quality 10 stone axe or pickaxe, you would need 10 strength. Note that the pickaxe does not appear to be any stronger than a stone axe at mining, merely faster.

Looks like I need to overhaul the mining page. That shit needs fixing.

I read that also on wikia, but I've realised that in my cave I only have q10 ores while some parts are harder to mine.
Then I made a mine hole in my cave and found q21 copper in the 2nd layer.

Could it be that you can only find higher quality ores in a mine hole or am I wrong?
Hope you have a great day

You can find quality ore on any layer. See Sev's post.
