How do I hermit?

What are some good considerations when trying to find a piece of land for personal use/hermiting alone? What resources are good to be near? Which ones can be forgotten or arent necessary. Would it be better in general to trade for what you cant get or hide and deal with it?

I'd look for caves with ore like iron. Depends on what you want to do really. It's always nice to have a swamp or mountain close for curios too.

No resources are necessary. I'd suggest soil quality if you are going to farm and a cave if you plan on mining. You can go your whole career as a farmer without touching metal (though it can help).

Basically it matters what your plans are. The best thing I can say if you're trying to do a little of everything (or have the option) is to find a plot of at least 20 quality soil (preferably 30) with a cave nearby.

Make sure your neighbors are semi-friendly, or at least won't raid you. It helps to be in an area where the 'big village' doesn't put up with random criminal acts.

Q 30 soil is not that rare. Search for 40+.

Also, don't forget to palisade/alt claim your cave (if any) from the INSIDE as well.

I'm a newbieish hermit too. I would suggest to aim for middling quality of resources like soil, below what more advanced players and villages might want for themselves.
Also don't build next to a river that is part of some big river network (some are more isolated). I think it's really a big lottery, though, of what neighbours you get.
