What would a good HHP score be for someone taming an auroch using the fence method.

there is a great guide for taming: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5786
you dont need a single hhp (i tamed quite a few animals without a single hit from them)

iamstrange is correct, done properly the fence/sign method will prevent you from taking damage.

Just make sure to move out of range any time your combat move is on cooldown and only move in to range to deliver your combat move.

While I agree that taming can be done without taking any damage from animals, people seem to be forgetting the damage that comes from Consume the Flame. I find that taming two animals tends to consume 100-150 shp if you keep your HP regeneration going steady (I bring food to keep myself in the green).

Personally I'd vote 200hhp is a nice level to have. That gives you room to take an accidental hit when moving in/out from sidesteps without having to run around with 10shp when you're done taming. I dislike letting my shp go below that in case any number of potential accidents happen on the way home.

well, i tamed 2 aurochsen with around 150 shp and never gone under 50%, the damage from consume the flame is not that bad

You can just Sting like a bee to reduce intensity to 0. If you were using Invocation of Skuld it's not a big difference.
With invocation of skuld + sting like a bee, you'd need 17 Initiative
With sidestep + consume the flames, you'd need 14 initiative.
(Both of these include the 2 initiative you would need for Quell)

+3 initiative buildup without the 10% shp damage.

Even terrible q10 Leather armor, pants, boots, and a boar helm will reduce any damage you take from an accidental hit to ~10 shp. A negligible pain. Just be more careful to watch their twitches before you make a move.

Eh, it happens. I've made the mistake once or twice over taming 16 or so animals. A beginner is bound to make a small mistake and needs to be prepared for it is all I'm suggesting. Also, I always forget about sting like a bee since I've literally never used it lol. Auroch seem to be able to hit for a good 20-30 damage on me consistently through bronze plate though. When using consume that can be significant.

With sidestep + consume you only need 14 initiative per taming attempt. 3 side steps (assuming you take no damage) and then consume. Using sting like a bee instead of consume would cost 20 initiative. Personally I'd much prefer sting, I hate being Low SHP when out on a river taming things.

Anyway I'm curious about something. What's the point of oppertunity knocks? All it does is reduce the opponents defense bar.

You are correct, it's only 14 Initiative. And I meant Sidestep, not opportunity knocks. My lack of sleep is showing =)
My apologies and corrected~

I used sidestep to tip the scale. I didn't see any damage from consume the flames? maybe I just wasn't paying attention. It's probably a bit dangerous but I started with 114 HHP. and at one point it knocked me unconscious but that was because the game froze and I couldn't move anywhere. I did get damaged when using sidestep though. and that was because I didn't move out of the way fast enough.

also if you get logged out do you need to start the process over again?
