Roundpole Fences and Signposts

Postby btaylor » Fri May 06, 2011 9:56 pm

I was thinking about doing some Boar hunting so I made a closed off square roundpole fence with gate around a boulder so I could attack in safety. To my surprise, the Boar tore down the walls and knocked me unconscious.

Now I want to try hunting Aurochsen but I am unsure whether or not they can tear down roundpole fences or signposts.

If anyone knows whether they can or not please let me know. Thank you.

When they're aggroed, yes. When they're fleeing, no.

So hunting Aurochsen from a boat would be the safest bet I guess.

Are you sure? I don't think they did in world 4, haven't tried recently though.

In the previous worlds you could make signposts around a boulder and range Aurochsen in complete safety, but I'm not sure I can do that now and I can't really try it with the risk of dying. I may have to just make an alt and test the theory myself.

In my experience aurochsen do not break roundpole fences or signposts when aggro'd. Unless it is a recent change (past couple of weeks) then no, they should not.

2Weeks ago they did not break constructions signs for me. So unless it's changed it should be fine.

Aurochen and Mouflon cannot break any structure.

Foxes can break signs but nothing else (a fully constructed roundpole fence will pen them in)

Boars, Deer and Bear can break anything with less soak than a palisade. If hunting multiple, beware this means they can and will destroy their fallen if you're pathable and on the other side of that corpse.

However, none of these creatures can break even so much as a signpost if you're in an unpathable location. This means you can signpost fence in a fox and sling it in comfort from a boat. This isn't really much use for boars/bears though since they'll aggro you if you try building near them.

Personal preference:

Sling Aurochen/Mouflon from a boat. You can pen them up with signs if you want to pull hair/tame them, otherwise don't waste your time.

Foxes you can sign pen up and sling to death, but I really stop bothering with them until I getthe ability to melee them to death quickly. It's too much work for too little meat otherwise.

Boars, sling and then punch chase for the kill. As long as they aren't healed by a deer (rare but possible) this method is safe. If they reaggro you for any reason you should still be easily able to outrun them back to your boat. Just bring 2 flasks of Q10 water or 1 flask of Q30+ water.

Deer: aggro, drag to river edge far away from the herd, deaggro, pen with signs, sling from the boat. 50MM and Q50+ sling suggested.

Bear: sling from boat. You can peace them and draw them back with a no damage sling attack if they run. With anything less than 30 MM expect this to take a while.

EDIT: While I'm thinking on it. Signing aurochen/mouflon only keeps you safe from them as long as your signs are up. Very easy for a griefer to break a couple signs and suddenly you have an angry herd of animals trying to trample you to death. Just makes the boat option more appealing.
