Mine Holes and Walls

Postby mcsproot » Sun May 08, 2011 9:37 pm

From what I hear, anyone without a wall is pretty much asking to get raided, robbed and killed. Also, mine holes make a good back door into the compound.

Currently, my stake is a small place, which once I get the materials will be a mine for my friend. Since the only thing of value will be the common metal, is it worth building a palisade wall, and making a seperate wall for the mine hole?

Considering the material cost of a mine hole (maybe not a lot to an established village though), is it worth the extra security?

Yes, simply having a mine there is a giant "raid me, I have something valuable" sign right on your front door. Sometimes they will try to get into your mine to get in instead of using a ram.

I assume you'll be digging a minehole at a prospected mineral node. Still worth palisading just so other nabs don't wander in and mine your ore on you tbh. Palisades are quite cheap compared to a lot of things you can make in this game.

Well, not directly over. I read the forums a bit and it seems the best place is close to where it says 'X metal found', go outside until it says 'Nothing found' and build there.

I thought the claim would prevent people without the criminal skills from doing anything below ground. I thought the claim worked for all world levels.

You've got the right idea. Build a few squares off of where you think the edge is. However, you could still be landing in the middle of the ore vein with how erratic prospecting can be.

Claims are only good for the tiles immediately around the claim, and only on the one level. (Word is that the idea has been floating around since w4, just hasn't been developed yet.) If you want claims on multiple levels, you need to make use of alts and multiple claims, village or personal.

As far as the hole goes, build it inside your compound. Put up a palisade (or brick wall if you have the metals) around it as close as possible and nobody will be able to come up and put a ram in there. Once you have the wrought and steel, make it a brick wall so you ensure nobody can come in and pali-bash it. If you do it right, you can ensure anyone coming up out of the hole either gets stuck in the gate or can't come up the ladder. (Not sure which. I was just finishing this in w4 and wasn't able to test it. Cellars can't be exited if anything is blocking the door above. Stands to reason the same could happen with a minehole.)

Nope. Claims don't extend underground and from what I understand you can't currently build claims on Layers 2 through 5 (Can only build them on paved land and you can't pave anything.) Build a palisade around it. Walls are cheap and will at least keep you safe for a bit.

This is the first metal we've got access to, so no brick walls.

I don't have a pali up yet.

What I was going to do was wall around the hole, then expand that wall around the compound. That way there are two gates, one to the mine hole and one for the main entrance.
