Making progress, then it stops.

I just started a new character yesterday and checked the area around it, was a good forest and had some hill cover on it, so I decided I'd set up there and go exploring a bit for a few days until I was ready to get settled and my progress has stopped completely now that the timber house is done and I've got all the basic essentials together, hell I even deforested around me a bit and carried the logs into a nice kind of sawmill esque pile near the small area I was just using to get my bearings, then paved a bit, then ploughed and looted some free (unclaimed) crops for early LP.

And now that it's all done, my LP doesn't seem to be progressing fast at all, I want Yeomanry, but at 4,000 LP I was probably better off not making the house at all because it's going to take a truckload of time to actually claim that place (so I'm expecting it to be taken).

The good part is as least I haven't seen people, there are a few palisaded settlements around, and an actual named village quite a ways away, but otherwise nothing exciting.

I need a way to get LP for Yeomanry, but I can't seem to discovery anything.

My exploration is 6, and I haven't found the perception foods required and have been living off someone's giant pumpkin patch for a while (I guess the constitution was needed at some point anyway), I have carpentry and all the basics to start making houses and such, but what seems like no active neighbours to get employed with (so that I can get some LP gain going), cone cows are just slow as hell and I wish that it was back to gaining LP from just doing things.

Have you been moving your belief slider towards peaceful for the LP bonus? Try raiding ant hills for some good curiosities early on, I find the emerald dragonfly's you can find in swamps are always pretty good too. When I first started I studied wish bones all the time too so find some chickens to get some of them and you will have enough LP in no time.

LP is gained exclusively through curiosities (minus the few LP you get for discoveries in the beginning).
Good curios to start with are dragonflies (found in swamp), barkboats (needs birch bark and boat building), ladybugs (mainly found on grassland/moor/heath), ant soldiers/queens/empresses, dewy lady's mantle (found in swamps at 80+ per*exp at dawn), stalagooms (in caves, 100+ per*exp), seer's bones, thistles (on mudflaps at 100+ per*exp), flotsams (in deep water, at 110+ per*exp), toy chariot (needs acre clay) and probably some more things I forgot.
There's plenty of stuff to study. Raise your INT so you can study them all at once and you might soon have more LP than you need.

Do I have to worry about getting my ass handed to me by ants? Not particularly familiar with the combat system, but I atleast checked them on the wiki and heard stories on the forums.

You can lead the ants to shallow water, where they will lose orientation. Then you can go back to raid the ant hill unhindered.
If you put some points in unarmed combat, you can just ignore the ants, as they won't be able to get through your defense bar.

When I was a low level I would start raiding the anthill then instantly run away until the ants had gone far from their nest, I then ran back to the hill and raided it before they could get back.

Tried just kiting them as suggested, works, got another decent curio to add to the hours, gaining LP pretty fast again.

Managed to hit 4k LP In a day by having used a bunch of soldier ants, seer's bones, dandelions and cone cows, had quite a bit of luck finding ant hills, must have raided about 7-9 Around the local area.

You should definitely locate a nearby swamp. Dragonflies are great LP, and you'll also find mantles there when you get a bit more exploration.

I made my home in woodland between mudflats, a river to the north and south, and a reasonably okay sized swamp, got grassland, got everything but mountain and moor really, and I was trying to catch a dragonfly earlier, didn't happen so well, on the upside the bloated leeches later made great fishing bait.
