do i leave a scent of murder if i summon someone with the reek of theft and kill him?

Yes. Retribution can continue on for quite a while. If you get a guy that is out by himself and no friends, then you probably don't have to worry about it so much. However, if he's got a bigger, badder alt, he might come back after you. Also, if you leave murder scents out in the open, a wandering, bored ranger might pick it up and track you down.

could the same thing happen with theft scents or is that uncommon?

A murder scent draws much more attention than theft scents, but some people will track anything as long as it is a summonable scent.

My suggestion would be to leave a runestone at the perps body, declaring his crimes and thus why you killed him. Therefore no rangers with actual ideas of justice will come around. Just assholes.

Easy for a random griefer to make runestones too you know.

For some reason people seem to think that runestones are the words of God and always true. Leaving a runestone to cover things up is actually not a terrible idea, whether it was blatant murder, revenge, or newbie griefing. Hell, you can probably convince some people they've done something wrong and deserved to die if you leave a runestone even.
