How do I earn LP?

I get 50 LP whenever something I've never had before enters my inventory, that's it. I don't get any by fishing, crafting/building things, etc.
What am I doing wrong? Do you only get LP from certain items?

Discoveries and curiosities. You get Discovery lp every time you pick up an item you have never seen before that has not been picked up by anyone else yet and that is not a finished good, such as a nettle shirt. You get curiosity lp by putting curiosities in your memtory. Ctrl+t, third tab should bring up the memtory window. Curiosities are items and they can be crafted, discovered, smelted, farmed, mined, fished up, carved, butchered, etc. etc..
