Founding village, what do?

Postby Jacob_Lee » Fri May 20, 2011 10:20 pm

How should I set up my city, as in, like my layout?

I know I'm making a 6 tile wide road going straight up and down then left and right at the middle, with plots for individual people. How big should the plots be?
Should I build the village claim on the inside or outside of the walls?
If it's outside, should I have a crossroad sitting by the claim that takes you to the middle of the cross?

Also, which name is better, Order of the Tumbleweed or Noob Patrol?

I'd go with Noob patrol, just the sound of it strikes fear in my heart

First, let me say that you should put the village idol as centrally as possible to avoid building too many banners to start. You're going to be building enough as it is. Next, never have anything leading into your walls. Villagers can teleport to the village idol or to their hearth fire and use crossroads to travel out of the walls.

You've got a lot of unasked questions here. The proper questions you ask can't be answered without answering these questions yourself.

How much active recruiting do you plan on doing?
What population are you aiming for?
Are you going to allow your villagers to put their own personal claim down with a cabin?
How many community resources are there going to be? Will the villagers need to store their own food, curios, or even their own tools (anvil, loom, etc)?

The size is completely up to you. Just remember that the bigger the plot and the more people, the bigger the walls will need to be. There's nothing wrong with starting small and then having a 'work day' to expand the walls later. You're eventually going to want layered walls, anyway, to discourage organized raiding.

Couple things you'll want nearby are mountains and swamps for easy making of Enthroned Toads. A cave is a great boon to starting metal production.

Common wisdom about walls is that they should extend 50 tiles past your actiivity zones so your villagers can't get sniped at by random passerbye's.

I have access to iron and tin, and am at the end of a river.

Also, is there some kind of "measuring tape" per se to measure tiles using the grid from Ender's without individual counting?

Forget about the grid lines for visual range. The simple thing to do is walk away from your 'activity zone' and see what's still visible. If something that people are going to be fairly idle working on, you're not far enough away. The easy way to do this is to hide everything and watch for the disappearing red blocks.

Now, I think this is one of those 'overly paranoid' things. ;) If you're villagers are paying attention while they're working (read: not sitting afk), the odds of getting sniped with one of the custom clients that lets you hide objects is slim to nothing, anyway. Also, you can always build a second wall, too, 20-30 (or more) away from your first wall for added security. I think wisdom says 50 tiles to ensure a ram can't be moved from one wall to the next without at least one repair. For the newer players: it gives you an extra 8 hours to spot people breaking in after you've already had 24 hrs to spot raiders and maybe a second chance to destroy the ram.
