is there anything else i need to know about mining before I attempt this? :D
Can I dig it even with VERY low strength?

You can MAKE the minehole just fine, but being able to dig your way out of it is unlikely with anything less than 50 STR.

which is pretty easy to get if you can kill a bear, just get a bearcape and beartooth necklace and you should be almost there in no time :D
eat the meat roasted for maximum STR bonus...
tho a newb chopping up a bear like that is kind of a waste :|

Things to keep in mind:
1) Avoid cave-ins, if they happen always heal ur HHP ans SHP and break all the rocks before continuing mining. Also, mine supports have a radius which u can see in custom clients. Make sure that tile u're gonna mine is 100% covered by green circle.
2) Build a hole some tiles away from the spot.
3) Surround your minehole with brickwall or at least palisade
4) Make "snake" tunnels if u cant build supports yet(3 tiles up, 3tiles left, 3tiles up, 3 tiles right etc)

Also, build a good q kiln, smelter, finery forge, anvil and craft a good smithy's hammer. Update them if u get any better material. Use good q coal - raise your saw and trees quality. There is also a bug with kilns, smelters and forges which allows u to use ony 1 coal or branch per load(1 tick).

I think that's all u have to know.

1. You actually only need greater than 50% coverage. There's a template on the wiki page for mining or mine supports one.
2. He means after prospecting a spot. Prospecting first is greatly suggested to at least ensure you're digging towards ore.
3. A must. Make sure you orient any gates properly, otherwise you won't be able to get out. A palisade around the minehole is more than enough. Underground at the bottom of the ladder, you might want a brickwall, though. This is to prevent anyone else from going into your mine or anyone coming up out of your mine.
4. This can actually be a zig-zag, too. just make sure you do exactly 3. This is also not a 100% guarantee to prevent a cave in. Also, pick one method or the other--snake or zig-zag. Changing tunnel types is the greatest chance of cave-ins doing this.

1. no actually the EXACT center pixel needs to be covered. don't risk it needlessly.

I'd go through the math for you, but if there's >50% coverage, the center pixel will be covered. Again, see the template on the wiki under mine support.

For ease, here it is:

yes >50% would definitely include the center pixel. Also you can cover the center pixel without covering 50% of the square (but its hard to see that small a difference -dont risk it-)

I was the one that submitted the coverage of the mine support based on my mining method in World 4. It is nice for layer 1 but anything below that I would not go too close to the edge less a misclick or lapse of attention renders your body a pile of compressed flesh and bone.
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.
