Current moon phase?

I want to catch plaice, but i can't know the proper circumstances without knowing the current moon phase. Is there any way to check it?

Wait until "Night" and when the Moon appears in the dial sort-of thing at the top of the screen. It should show the Phase of Moon. I'd give you a linky to the wiki page for it, but seems someone deleted the "Phases" page. Best of luck to you though!

Sure there are, just not in the current game client's ... at the moment.

There is now. Ender client now has a Day/Night clock tooltip showing the current Moon phase.
