Q: Tree growing and terraforming

Postby Thunderbrew » Wed Jun 08, 2011 4:03 am

Hello. Two questions about tree growing and terraforming...

I planted a bunch of trees (that are from broad-leaf forests, and I planted them in Needle-leaf forest)...this was yesterday, almost 24 hours ago. How long will it take for them to grow into trees? And to follow up, how long will it take for them to start producing fruit/seeds and what not?

Next question, that kind of relates to the above. I cleared out a large section of needle-leaf trees...how long does it usually take for moor or grassland to grow in it's place? Also, what relates tot he above... I heard something about planting broad-leaf trees to get grassland to grow? Stumps or abandoned tree logs won't stop the growth of grassland, will it?

That is all. Thank you :)

Logs or stumps wont stop grass from growing, no.

grass will grow after a while after you've chopped down all the trees in the vicinity, but you'll have to plow grass tiles for it to decay into moor, and you'll have to plow moor to grow into heath.

Trees take a long time to grow, cant remember the numbers, but a long time compared to other things in-game.

Trees on the wrong ground take absolutely ages, like a month for oak on coniferous land iirc.

On the right ground, it's about a week for the fast ones iirc.

Thanks. :) Guess I have some time to wait for the trees to grow...mostly growing apple and mulberry trees, but I do have an oak tree and another type of tree growing.

Also, have some green grass growing in small spots in the cleared forest, only really small patches. Does the grass spread? Or whats there is what is going to remain? I cleared a pretty big section of forest around my own, but maybe I need to clear more?

A forest tile will decay into grass on a random decay tick if it is more than [25?] tiles away from a tree.

Ah okay. I think it is less than 25, as some needle-leaf trees were sort of close by and grass still grew. I'll have to see how far the needle-leaf trees have to be...I think from what I saw, its actually 15? I didn't think to look. Something worth for me to keep an eye on, though.

In any case...thank you for the answer :)

The oak/maple trees will grow on grassland but it will take close to a month, been more than two weeks since I planted one of each on grassland that I planted over needle leaf forest land (dark green) and they are about in the last stage now. The grass is not staying completely and the forest is coming back in patches of 2-4 space size's. The willow's are growing wonderfully on the grassland as well as the birch. Willows on grassland are ready in side a week's time, the best/easiest thing I can grow in this (dark green forest) area is the fir's and pines, firs growing with in a week's time.

If a tree is planted on land that it likes (ie grows faster) it will quickly give you some lower Q branches first, the other things come in as it goes into higher growth stage's and the Q will rise too. If its on land it don't like it will take longer to advance to the higher stage's so it will take longer for things to start growing on it.
