how do I build a palisade into a cave?

When I try laying stone next to a cave wall, it says : "there is not enough clearance to pave there"

Is there a work around?

it's not really a work around. It's how it has to be done. You can't pave within so many tiles of a cave wall (think it's 3), and thus can't build there. The solution is to get rid of the offending cave wall. Note that this might need some mine supports.

I can't mine there.
That why it was interesting to pali, noone could bypass it by mining...

Go out from the entrance to where you can mine. You can dig far enough away you can wall in the entrance. It's become pretty common practice. See the screenshot in this post: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17666&hilit=+boarmurdered#p204411
