How to grow high quality crops

Postby Procne » Wed Jun 22, 2011 9:01 pm

Hi,

It may be silly question. I have checked wiki many times, and my understanding was that quality of crops is capped by quality of soil (+- 5).
However I have met people claiming that they grow ql 150+ crops on ql 60 soil. Is this possible? Is there some way to keep increasing crops ql so high above soil ql?

At first I thought they were mistaken / lying. However after being presented ql 150 vegetables I start to doubt. So is there some way or did they simply have access to that high quality soil? Also, what is the highest possible quality of soil?

Either the wiki needs to be updated, or you misread it. The crops are +/- 5 per generation with soil and farming skill modifying the random range. (Each decreases the + by half.)

Well, wiki says:

" It (The quality of seeds) is also soft-capped by current soil quality."

I understand it this way: If i plant ql 60 seeds in ql 50 soil then i will get ql 55 +- 5 seeds in return. So in the end it would be impossible to effectively cultivate crops of quality higher than soil ql + 10?

Wiki is wrong. It's -5/+5 when crop q is lower than soil q, and -5/+2 when crop q passes soil q.

Wow, this is new one. So basically I can increase crop quality forever, no matter what quality is soil.

That's great, thanks :)

Give the wiki article, please. Hard to update it if we don't know what article you're referencing. :)

That page was pretty accurate. The formula on the page was wrong, but the information written there was pretty much correct. I've already fixed it to read correctly, though, so if anyone wants to check, you'll need to go to previous revisions.

Which is not true either. Farming skill works as a real softcap, that is, if farming skill is lower than quality of seeds, then quality of product will be roughly equal (seedQ + farming skill)/2.

Planted ql 120 carrots with 70 farming skill, harvested ql 91-97 carrots.

Good information there. I remember a lot of discussion on farming after the w4 restart when farming was completely redone. As a bit of information, extra items--straw, plant fibers, poppy flowers-- aren't softcapped. (It's implied in your post, just wanted to state it explicitly ;) ) It does appear that the seeds are softcapped and then the random range is applied.
