Some questions from a new player

Postby DamJNeT » Fri Jul 01, 2011 12:28 pm

Hi there !

I'm pretty new, began the game yesterday. I've read Sevenless's guide, wiki etc... A goldmine :]

So I'm now established, got my little claim, working on LP to extend it a bit.

From what I've seen, early game the point is to rush INT to be able to work on more curios at a time. So I'm looking for blueberries, but rarely find them compared to "stringroots". Is there a particular place to find them ? Also I've seen you can fish perchs. I'm established kinda far from water. Do I have to lift my boat and walk for half an hour everytime ? How do you guys do ? And I've only caught sturgeons, roaches and bill or smthg like that. No Perchs. Do you need specific amount of skill ?
Is there any other "noobfood" to get int ?

Should I do another toon specialy for fishing/foraging ?

Thx for the answers

you need to icnrease your exploration in order to see things. blueberries appear everywhere, u jsut need to go out and find them.

int is icnreased by perch and blueberries.

once u can make flour and have carrots and onions u can make better int food, like perched perch and blueberry pies

it takes time, but it's worth those early days of finding everything out

good luck:)

Dig worms, get perch. I'm not pro or anything, but on a new char... a couple of crates of perch should get your INT to around 20 in no time. Should be enough to study a few curios.

Next you want to work on getting your PERC * EXPLORATION up a little bit, to find better curios (unless you want to craft some?).

After a day or two of that, you'll be off to the races. Ant hills are amazing if you can score a queen/empress, or a couple in a row :P

And for perch I just dont see them :) I caught everything else but no perch ehe.

Thx for advices, I'm gonna work on that

My problem is that I'm FAR away from water :)
From what I've read its good against thieves and griefers, but yeah kinda annoying concerning ressources...

Also, how can I be sure to gain int and not another stat when eating. You have to eat only INT FEP to be sure ?

For example, last time I had like 5 int + 3 agi + 2 con, and my agi went up instead of my int. Does it mean I had 50% chance to get +1 int, 30% agi and 20% con ?

While you're right that you can't be certain you'll get int, there's a lot of bonuses from eating multi FEP foods. Typically speaking a multi FEP food will give more total FEPs than a single FEP food. A good example is cow chorizos (5 FEPs, pure con) vs tame game liverwurst (7 feps total, 4 con, 3 agi). As you can see, eating tame game liverwurst gives you 40% bonus FEPs in return for a 43% reduced chance to get con (100%->57%). However, that's not the only bonus from eating multiple FEP types. If you eat more types of foods, you get the very powerful variety bonus. All this makes it so you have to eat less food to gain stats.

Now this might not seem important at low levels, but at higher levels the side FEPs from variety food make a very very small chance of giving any FEP since the value is a small portion of the total. It's good to get into the habit of eating variety food because in the long run it'll reduce the hunger you need to grind for stats dramatically.

Fishing is a bit of a pain. There's a lot of tricks to it and only a handful of people have truly mastered it. Check out the wiki guide on fishing. I'm not going to testify to it's complete accuracy, but it will be a good lead on what you should likely be trying and where.

Hey there !

Okay Im settled now, in a pretty good shape :)

Some other questions :

I have to plant trees to get above QL10 branches bark etc... right ?
If so, I need to get the highest possible QL for soil water and treeplanter right ?

Then is it important to get higher QL for my herbalist table ?

And for my taning tube too I believe, cause I can only get QL 9 leather atm, wich is pretty low.

So I did a farmer, if I want some metal I believe I need to do another char, devoted to mining / smithing right ? How does mining work ? I found some mines not so far, but I don't have a clue on how it works, even after checking the wiki.

Last question : Tea buff last 25 min max ? Or length is in relation with tea QL ? Also, how comes I get QL 6 tea with QL 30 leaves ?
Thx for answers, peace !

The short answer: yes, you need quality. Quality in eeeeverything. With a better quality bone saw you can make better boards. Even if you can't hunt boars yet yourself, some people go round hunting them and leaving the skeletons by the river, so boat around for a while and see what you can find (hopefully without becoming a target yourself). Or trade with a neighbour, of course. You need decent survival to get decent bones (max q 56 from a boar), so if your survival isn't that high yet, wear two sets of the best nettle clothing you can make to boost it.

Are they q30 *fresh* tea leaves, and they become lower q when you dry them? If so, you need a better herbalist's table. Otherwise, I expect you need better quality water to make the tea, and probably a better quality cauldron to make it in. Sorry :)

One of the things I didn't know about mining, is that it's not possible to mine within 50 tiles of the cave entrance (if you mean a cave and not a minehole that someone built). So the very basic 'how to mine' facts are: buy Mining. You will then get the Adventure: Mine option. When you click this, your curor turns into a little pickaxe, the same as for Adventure: Destroy. So go into a cave or minehole, and if it's a cave walk more than 50 tiles from the entrance, get your mining cursor and click on the cave wall. Either you will start mining or you will get a message that the rock is too hard. If the rock is too hard, go away and get more strength. If you can mine, probably there won't be any ore there anyway. If there is ore, it will appear in your inventory. If there is no ore, rocks will drop onto the ground instead. If there is no ore, walk further and try again :) Good luck.
