Ferrous metal quality formulae

Postby Sitting_Bill » Sat Jul 02, 2011 1:47 pm

OK, these are really confusing me - I hope someone can help me out :)

1. SMELTER

I'm pretty sure that

CastQ=(OreQ*2+FuelQ+SmelterQ)/4

is the correct formula. Thats as far as my knowledge goes however, so i would like help with the following please:

2. FINERY FORGE
-cast to bloom Q formula
3. HAMMER AND ANVIL
-bloom to wrought Q formula
-if this is affected by nature/industry
4. STEEL CRUCIBLE
-Q formula for the steel, 2 people I trust have told me very different things here. One says that the crucible q doesnt matter at all, one says it does...

Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately I can't say with certainty, a lot has changed since W3, but I can indeed say that:
Steel Crucible Q matters -
Steel Cruc Q = (Average of Cast Q + Average of Brick Q)/2

Finery Forge Q matters -
Finery Forge Q = (Average of Cast Q + Average of Brick Q)/2

Bloom->Wrought Q formula = (bloom Q *2 + hammer Q + anvil Q)/4
With the difference in possibility of hitting 1.2* or 0.8*.
Hammer Q/Anvil Q should now be set to soft cap, cannot raise, can only lower.
Full Industry: 66% Wrought (Around there anyway)
Full Nature: 0% Wrought (All cast, useful for spiraling)

Steel Q -
I have heard that in Steel Q the 'fuel' (used inside of it) do not matter at all and that said player tested it W4, I am not sure if this is true, it is best to test it, I stay away from steel fueling so I have yet to do so.
Coal Q does matter.
Wrought Q is final Steel Q unless it is soft capped by a mixture of: Crucible Q, Coal Q, possibly Fuel Q.

Poor soul, unfortunately you've started playing a game recently after Loftar was experimenting with a different set of mechanics, it's confused the hell out of everyone since the devs don't document changes really. To my knowledge here's what happened:

Smelters can increase the quality of metal put in, as can charcoal fueling them - this hasn't changed.

Old system:
Fuel for steel crucibles used to not matter, the coal ingredient did. Fuel for finery forge did(?) matter.
Crucibles/Finery forge used to soft cap (not increase, only decrease) quality.
Anvils do not play any role in bloom->wrought quality

Temporary system:
Fuel for steel crucibles still didn't matter. Fuel for finery forge DID matter.
Both finery forges and steel crucibles could increase the quality of materials being processed.
Anvils MAY have soft capped bloom when it turned to wrought higher Q than the anvil (important note for spiralling).

Reverted system:
Fuel for steel crucibles now matters. Fuel for finery forge matters.
Both finery forge and steel crucibles now soft cap only again.
Anvils play no part in bloom->wrought quality.

So, does the quality of crucibles/finery forges matter? Well, yes in a time saving sense. If you can make a Q 95 crucible(somehow) & use Q100 charcoal you could possibly cook up to Q76 steel with just using Q10 sticks as fuel (Guessed that soft cap formula is (2xCharcoal + 1xFuel + 1xCrucible)/4 ). That's an incredible time/effort/forest saver compared to having a Q60 crucible soft capping your steel even after using Q70 fuel or something stupid. That being said, it takes a very hefty 3rd/4th place in importance. Using your good clay for kilns and smelters is a much better investment at first.

Fuel for steel crucs originally DID matter, however it didn't 'save' so only the last few ticks did (you could unload, then put last branch and tadah!)
Old system fuel for finery did matter.
Fuel for finery forge still matters.

in temporary system (w3 initial spiraling) you could raise bloom Q with anvil+hammer (in the actual formula).

Kilns/Smelters are important to start but having a few high q steel crucs is also very important.
All of this will need more testing by someone who has 56 hours to spare for tests though.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11259
when i first read this thread, i had no idea how smithing worked, and i never understood what it meant, moreover ive always been full nature anyways. a miner/smith friend of mine noticed "the fix" soon enough and i asked loftar about it and learned what was going on and we were convinced somehow, no problems.
people dont wonder until they find some disadvantages and they just keep using bugs, intentionally ot not, more or less.

all those who had read this and still didnt report it were all either abusing "the bug" so to speak, or didnt even try to use it because they didnt notice "the bug" by not using unnecessary high quality stuff.
those who hadnt read it were lazy enough not to check official announcements, or blame wiki editors for their laziness? lol

i do not see anything you should blame devs on this.

Wow, seems complicated :)

OK - so can I just check I've got this right:

for the Finery Forge, the combined average q of the fuel and FF softcaps the bloom q?
for the hammer and anvil making wrought from bloom, they combine and softcap the quality, and there is a small chance of the q going up or down?
for the steel crucible... the fuel, charcoal and the steel crucible combined just softcap the steel q?

Tonkyhonk, my problem is I've never even seen the ORIGINAL formulae, so that thread doesn't help me much :P

thanks guys :)

ah, my post was directed to Sevenless, just saying that devs dont need to tell bug abusers if the bug was fixed.

It's something like (bloom * x + hammer + anvil) / ( x + 2). I'm not sure what the multiplier [i]x[/x] is on the bloom but it's at least 2. (May only be 2.) It can then be raised by a percentage or lowered. As far as I know, the info on the wiki is still accurate.

Number is right from my experience.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
