You have to pave it or stomp it to dirt -- though from what I understand, even those methods will eventually be taken back by nature. It at least prolongs it more than simple plowing, if all you were looking to do was clear the area. Just be aware you won't be able to grow crops on paved ground, obviously, heh.

The regrowth mechanic is there specifically so you have to plow. Your fields need to be tended and all that.

Hm... If regrowing furrowed land uses the nearest natural tile (Grass, heath, forest, etc), could you use this method to make a whole continent into sand, by making all tiles next to the chosen tile into pavement, then spread out?

My guess is no. If I'm correct then plowed and paved ground are only "layers" on existing ground. In other words server remembers what type of terrain is under plowed / paved ground. This way furrowed land would not turn into nearby type of terrain, but into type of terrain that originally was there

I base this guess on a fact that you can change paved ground to a grassland unless pavement is, for example, on rock terrain. Meaning that even thought it's pavement, server also knows that there is rock and disallows planting grass.

It doesn't work that way. No tile ever decays into mudflat or sand.
