Underground Vaults

Hi

Whats so great about these in particular? Is there some way of building them that I haven't thought of, that means they are very easily defended? Or do you have to build brick walls around the minehole on each level to defend them...

only one entrance, unless your attackers want to to build another one to your level, and then they have to dig through hard as fuck rock to get to you. Plus you can see them coming a mile away.

And the mats required to dig to l5 is a little excessive and annoying for ur attackers

Ic an say something about advantages :
1.its hard to mine underground so not all of your enemies will be able to mine throught another minehole
2.if u reach layer 5 with and all of your mineholes will be brickwalled and there will be area around them brickwalled too, they will need 10x24h=240hours to destroy them
3.even if they strike from another minehole to the one at level 5 u can go up one or two levels and you will be safe again :D

Because we can and we will.... die!

I see two main advantages: 1) Bottlenecks. If you brickwall around the minehole and the ladder, then you can have 2 walls per level, granting you 2 days of ram drying per level. And 2) Space. You can expand your borders, sure, but after a certain point it becomes easier to go across Z levels, rather than X and Y. You can build kilns, ovens, even houses underground, allowing you to double your village size underground by digging it out. This leaves your above-ground for things like crops and cattle, and your underground for storage and whatnot.

Also, coming from Dwarf Fortress, I'm personally much in favor of building underground, like a proper dwarf would.

The only reason you have to have your cattle above ground is because there is no way to get them to walk through a door.

Bah. Those cave dwarves do nothing but grumble if they have to show their faces to the sun. Heck. They can't even put in a full days work. Us hillfolk live right and proper like any sentient being should. We go dig out our gems and ores don't have to worry about a cave in taking out our homes.

Actually, we generally vomit if we go outside, but that's aside the point!
