Newbie Trading

Postby realedazed » Fri Jul 15, 2011 8:59 pm

I'm excited. I got my first claim started and everything is going smoothly. I'm training exploration so I can find WWW. But, I'm sort of impatient. I'd like to trade, but how do I do so? And what could anyone want from me? I figure most of the people who have something to trade already have everything that I could create/forage by now.

Also, I'm having trouble placing a tanning tub. I try to place it on paved ground, plowed ground and grass and I keep getting "you cannot build here".

Any help with that?

Thanks!

Get palisade and village idol up ASAP, then you'll be able to trade.

Yup, *nobody* does deliveries on foot, you'll need a village idol so you can teleport.

As for what you can trade, don't worry, there's lots of stuff. Fish, pearls and most foragable curios are always in demand. It's not that they can't get those on their own, it's that they can produce more valuable stuff in same time if they work in the village rather than go out and forage. Basically, you're trading more of your time for less of theirs. But it's still worth it for you, because setting up infrastructure for those higher value jobs takes ages, so it'd be more work for you to make it all on your own.

I'd add : make your idol in a pali/bw for village port.
Quite safer in case you meet evil traders.

The world is a big place, trading by foot is nigh-impossible. I'm slightly confused about how village trading actually works though, in my limited experience, you could only invite people to your village if they were close enough to click on? Or were we doing it wrong?

Either way, once you get a trader into your village group, they use the travel action to teleport to your village idol, perform the trade, and then they teleport to their hearthfire. Then they can leave your village and go back to their own. If you put your village idol inside a medium-sized ring of wall, it discourages the unfriendly thieves who would try and kill you as soon as they teleported in. To be extra safe, a system of airlock doors and alts holding keys could be used. If you're doing a lot of trading, invest in a crossroads.

Yes, trading is a bit more mid-game, but that's normal. Early-game, you have nothing worth trading for anyways. Train up some marksmanship so that you can be able to kill deer for antlers.

Use hearth secret to add as friend, invite to a group via Kin window, then use group interface to invite to village.

People can be oathed when they're in a party.

I suppose this could work if the two villages are close by but most people don't have enough agility. For most village-teleport trading people destroy their hearthfire before teleporting to the trade partner's village idol. Doing this allows them to travel any distance regardless of agility. To get home they party with the lawspeaker or chief of their home village, get another invite, and teleport to the home idol (again without a hearthfire).
