newbie help?

Okay so my friend was playing this and i kinda got interested. I have had 3 guys the first 2 have all been killed while i was still figuring it out. Now on my 3rd guy Im getting somewhere but I want to make a claim on the land before i start getting into more serious like building houses and what not. What can i do to get the 4000lp to make a claim? and I have killed 2 bunnies an have their fur/pelt whatever its called on my drying frame. how long does it take for them to finish drying? and how long before i can go after like deer or bigger animals? its very frustrating trying to find those bunnies. thanks for any help itd mean alot
