Some scents left behind are heinous enough acts that the tracker can summon the perpetrator at their hearth fire and kill them at will. Vandalism, Battery (knocking a character out), Theft, and Murder are all leave a character vulnerable. Think twice about committing these crimes. (Or don't think at all and then come whining on the forums when you get killed in retaliation. The forums lubs good dramas.)

Even leaving Assault (just attacking, but not knocking out) and Tresspassing can get you tracked down and killed if you're doing it frequently. In this case, the perpetrator will get camped until they log on and then ganked. If nothing else, the person or village getting violated will break in and wreck havoc on what you have, even to the point of making you log in somewhere randomly in the wilderness.

And before you think about it, no, teleporting to the other side of the world will not save you, for they will track you down till they find you.

Also, destroying your HF (Hearth Fire) so they can't summon you will mean they can summon you anywhere, if you're not online.

Weak but basic defense is to hide in a house surrounded by palisades. This won't save you from anyone with power, but it will protect you from a noob you stole carrots from...

If the noob has a clue (thus, by definition, not a noob), they'll hop on IRC and sell a few pumpkin pies, blueberries, whatever they can get to a real ranger and that ranger will come around and still hunt the perp down.

Palisades are a minimal of defense. Nearly anyone can one-man a ram and break in. Get three fresh alts (have to multi-client) to help you go even faster.

Excellent points! I was just going to let him flounder, though. If someone wants to "break the law" without knowing the consequences, they deserve to learn them the hard way.

Scents disappear after so many days. It depends on type. No matter where it's at, it disappears.

Just a note for future reference: items that have timers keep ticking no matter where they're at. Examples are scents, eggs, and silk worms. Conversely, some containers will have a timer for an item, but if an item is removed, the timer resets.

I think OP still isn't aware of the fact that scents can summon him while he is offline and thinks he can sit it out by staying logged off for a couple of days. So, just gonna point it out again.

Mine was to see him sit online in a dark hole without a HF, not know of auto-log out.
