That's correct. In order to count as a discovery, you have to produce the item yourself. You can't pick it up from the ground where someone dropped it or out of a crate or cupboard. Some items, such as boards, drop to the ground when produced, so it counts when you make it yourself.
As a note, some items are produced in an inventory, such as metal bars in a smelter or bricks in a kiln, and these are discovered when a character picks it up from there. Thus, one characters work can provide discoveries for many. If, in your travels, you come across someone with a barter or vending stand, buying from that (or building your own for this purpose) works as making a discovery, too.
