Clay (and all resources, really) occur in "nodes". There's one tile on the map with a certain quality of raw material, and then it extends outwards from there in decreasing quality. By this, it's possible to find the highest quality of a material by checking it at different locations, and playing the hot or cold game. When you dig too much, then the node will be exhausted and refuse to give up further clay. If you wait, the node will recover naturally to its former position, allowing you to dig for more. When you dig, it reduces the quality of clay (or other resource) until it drops below q10, at which point it doesn't give you any more. Waiting some time raises the quality back up to the node's max. Sand, water, and dirt are all infinite, even if you overuse the node down to q10, there will still be q10 materials to gather. Acre clay and ball clay can be harvested anywhere, but in most places you only get 1 clay and then not any more for a few hours. On a node, you can gather more clay.
