Prospecting and Mining

Postby ar102489 » Thu Jul 21, 2011 6:43 pm

Essentially I need help understanding mining.
I'm down in my mining hole, and get a reading. Does that mean there's ore underneath me on level 2 or is it pointing towards the ore on my current level 1?

Prospecting always shows deposits on the layer below you.

Fml.
What's the radius from the point you're standing that it searches?
I read the wiki article but am still a bit confused.

What Q rustroot extract are/did you use?

Radius is based on ((Q-10) * 5) x ((Q-10) * 5)

Edit: Posts below point out this formula is under debate, and is not a radius but a square. Credit to the posters below, just didn't want to be the spreader of false/questionable info.

I was using q30 extract. So that means the radius is...
100x100?

Someone** suggested following the reading of a prospect in a cardinal direction (n/e/s/w) until you are at roughly 90 deg to it. Than turning toward it. Seems like a solid idea.

** sorry I can't be bothered to look through as to who it was, but they are very nice and helpful

I recommend reading Sevenless's guide on prospecting

Since someone linked Sevenless's guide....

That formula for range (above) is in question. It may very well be accurate, but because of the variance in prospecting, not able to be measured. Sevenless reported ranges much farther than that formula gave. Also, the formula from the wiki is not a radius, but rather a square with sides of X centered on the character.

First of all, its a square, not a circle and squares dont have radius.

And also this formula is probably wrong.

So using rustroot on level 5 is obviously pointless.

What methods have other's used for hitting veins on lvl 5?

We drilled striaght down to 5 and have just gone in a straight line hoping to hit the motherlode.

the other option I see is doing the same sort of thing on level 4 straight line mining out and prospecting getting a hit and then mineholing

interested to see what people think is the best option?
