Cow gate blocking

Postby thirty-seven » Thu Jul 21, 2011 9:02 pm

Hello.

How does cow gateblocking work?
- How many tiles should i leave between the gates?
- Is blocked cow will be able to give milk to calfs?
- Will the bull be able to inseminate blocked cows?
- Are there any other ways to block it?

Thanks.

I have *only* a corner post between my gates.
All my milk giving cows are in gates, and my calfs have not starved. I believe calfs teleport-drink same as food troughs.
I keep my bull in a fenced off area (separate from the girls), so I don't know.
I don't know other ways to do this.

My tips:
Try to have just the hind legs in the squares that the gate occupies before closing it. Closing/Opening the gates is a bitch, but well worth it IMO. If you can right click->info on the cow you'll be able to milk it. If no one else puts up a SS within the next day or so I'll try to (my play time is on the weekends).

You can destroy the cornerposts and the gate remains, this makes locking animals into gates much easier.

Bulls will physically mount a cow, so yes they need physical access. Calves will apparently drink from any milk-holding item, be that cow or barrel. So I've heard from reliable sources.

That's true for any baby animal. Also, feeding range for cows is about the same as troughs from what I can tell.

Yes. But do they have a physical access to locked cows?

I don't know that part. I'm tempted to say "the can reach the rear, that's the only part they need". I've observed cattle rocking to involve the male coming behind, a rocking animation, and the male leaving from behind, implying that the act of mating makes the bull temporarily "teleport" onto the *ahem* "work zone".

Depends on how you place them, if you do it right bull can get in.
