Can you place mineholes anywhere?

Postby ironvamp » Mon Jul 25, 2011 12:48 am

I was just thinking about this and was wondering if you can place them anywhere or if you absolutely need to prospect to find a suitable place (like finding a spot to place a well).

There are locations where absolutely cannot place a minehole, but then it will tell you when you go to build it. Otherwise, nothing is stopping you from building it in the middle of nowhere. Is it worth it the time and expense to you when there isn't any ore nearby? Tunneling is a good way to burn stamina, but navigating the snake is a huge PITA.

Mineholes do make for some storage, if nothing else. Especially if you already have metal, you can place a few supports and get some massive and relatively cheap storage space. Cupboards can be built inside and then moved to a mine, which grants some impressive storage capacity. This, along with cave cheese, are the only two reasons to really build a random minehole. These are just luxury items too, expensive and only viable if you've already got the capacity.

In other words: Yes, but there's no real reason.

Yes, they do make for extra storage, but if you're at the point that you describe here, it's hardly cheap nor easy. You'd be better off building more mansions with cellars for storage compared to the effort of putting up the brick walls needed. The cheese is the ONLY reason to build a minehole at a random spot.
