Board storage

Postby Sitting_Bill » Mon Jul 25, 2011 2:45 pm

This might seem like a slightly bizarre question, but what is the most space-efficient way of storing boards outside in a signpost? For blocks I just use a palisade cornerpost sign, but now that I need boards next to my steel crucibles, it would be nice to find the equivalent for boards, if possible... I'm thinking a boat, but perhaps you guys know better. thanks :)

Boards for steel crucible? What is the quality of your wrought iron and boards?

It seems to me, that fuel does not affect quality of steel, at most it works as a soft cap. So I would propose that you burn those boards in a kiln to get some coal, if only resulting coal will be of higher quality than wrought iron. If I'm correct one piece of coal counts as the same amount of fuel as single board. From each board you get 2 coals, and each coal takes only 1 slot.

From my tests the softcap for the steel is (CoalQ+FuelQ+CrucibleQ)/3. The boards I make from q10 logs with my saw are *just* high enough to max out the softcap to 80, perfect for my highest q wrought :).

I really hope you are right about coal counting as 2 units of fuel :). I know that it does in kilns, but it doesn't seem to in smelters, and I havent tested it for steel crucibles. If it does count as 2, thats awesome, I'll just use large chests as storage for coal :).

As for the steel quality...

I had ql 25 wrought iron, ql 50-55 coals and boards, ql40 crucible.
resulting steel quality... 25.

Also, you can't use boards in smelters, so it's hard to compare. Smelters simply burn fuel faster.

Hmm, maybe stupid question - how come you have ql 80 wrought iron, and only ql10 trees? :/

Yeah, the wrought q hard caps the steel q. The other qualities only come into effect if their combination is lower than the wrought q, in which case the steel q is softcapped. Good point about the smelters.

Because I hate treefarming, but love smithing, so I bought in some nice coals.. :P

I do have higher q trees now that are growing, but why waste them if i can use boards/coals from native trees, that still won't softcap me :)

Cards are best short term way due to 20 per tile. But if you want longterm, you can always store them in barter stand. Put stones in barter and as payment 8 boards. "Buy" 100 stones and you got yourself 800 boards in barter stand.

Hmm. Is there some way I can make it so that anyone in my village can take the coals stored in the barter stand? Also, is there some way that the "owner" of the barter stand can "buy" things from it, or should he be an alt who is never going to be used to put coals in?
