Newbie Questions

Postby MightySheep » Tue Jul 26, 2011 12:13 pm

don't say "use search" because there is actually so much information that just isn't available anywhere

The wiki seems to lack many entries and the entries that are on it seem to lack many informationz

Ok so I started yesterday and found a very big old town where the wall has literally just fallen down and I think I'm the first outsider to get access to all this loot but instead of taking and running I decided to live here and make use of all the things available :) but turns out while I logged off last night some angry ppl were online hiding all the loot :(

I'm now trying to learn PvP so I can deal with these pesky people, I've some decent equipment already (78ql bear cape, bronze plate, 61ql bear talisman, shield and rest is leather armour. Also a 20ql bow and full quiver of bone arrows). Stuck with stone axe for weapon though.

Anyway, the questions:

Is there any sort of grinding/leveling? I spent a lot of time farming these fields because I thought it would get my farming up but now I'm starting to think the only way to get skills up is to buy them :|

I have however noticed that base attributes go up on their own, does 'learning ability' just increase the rate of this this ? (there's no wiki article for learning ability)

I have read that you can grind LP... but when I spam fires or buckets etc I don't see my lp going up at all

What does pigskin do? (no wiki article)

    Leather boots or bunny slippers?

I'll probaly add more questions here later

A: You earn learning points by using curiosities. You can gather curiosities as a form of grinding. Or grind materials to make curiosities. The only way to get skills up is by buying them.

I have however noticed that base attributes go up on their own, does 'learning ability' just increase the rate of this this ? (there's no wiki article for learning ability)
A: They don't go up on their own. They go up when you eat food and different food gives you different stats.

I have read that you can grind LP... but when I spam fires or buckets etc I don't see my lp going up at all
A: You've read old articles. You're probably using the abandoned wiki. http://www.ringofbrodgar.com is the new wiki.

What does pigskin do? (no wiki article)
A: It's an animal hide. You can dry it on a drying rack and then tan it in a tanning tub to make leather out of it. Or you can use the tanned hide to make leather straps or various other hide goods.

Leather boots or bunny slippers?
A: Leather boots give you some armor but will break. Bunny Slippers will never break but offer you no armor. You should use bunny slippers if you've already got a bronze plate. It's not like you would survive any form of combat, pve or pvp, regardless.

There wasn't even a need for search for any of this, this is all in the beginner guides that are stickied on this forum. The answers are all on the wiki. Learning Rate is literally just how many Learning points you receive per 1 Learning Point you earn. Nothing unintuitive or weird. If you have 300% Learning Rate, then for every Learning point you'd get, you get 3 instead.

I'm not such a fan of the curiosity system of gaining all your skills, I mean you don't need to ever be online for more than 5 mins a day and you can skill up at the same rate as someone actively playing, at least a little lp gain from grinding would have been preferable imo.

Okay, cool. We're not going to have this discussion here.
In terms of practical purpose, it was taking me roughly an hour and a half to two hours to get the curiosities I'd need for a couple of days without a well established, stream lined village but with all of the skills I would need for optimized gathering and production. You could be outpacing me pretty easily if you spent the time with items like cone cows. I assure you that you'll have plenty to do and work on starting out.

There are better and worse curiosities. The best ones are usually gathered while exploring and are quite rare. So getting better curiosities takes some time and effort. At first it may seem slow and boring since low intelligence allows to have only small amount of curios at the same time. But as your intelligence increases you are able to use more and more curios at the same time.

ok I'm getting ready to get out of this place, this is what I've got going with me

Image

I need help deciding what to take.

I figure the tools are sort of a necessity I'm not sure.
I don't need the 23ql spectacles but they seem valuable and only 1 slot so I keep them.
The bone saw is 91ql which seems pro and there is also another one at 91ql im not sure if I should bother to bring it.
Going to be replacing the bear meat with pumpkin pies which I'm cooking now
The ink looks like it might be valuable but again, I really have no clue
10ql waterskin worth keeping?

I would prefer more space for extra wishbones and seer's bones but I just don't know what to keep and what to get rid of

pls tell me if I need more curiosities or food or maybe some bear tooths (theres quite a few) or rabbit furs or maybe string (theres lots)

I'm going to be making a boat and sailing to some distant island to build a town or something

Ditch the shield, stoneaxe, fishing rod, ink, chicken bone, and waterskin. They might seem like valuable objects but they're not and they're easy to replace. The shield is utterly useless to you and offers you no defense at all, the stoneaxe is only valuable to have in high quality if you have a mine, the ink isn't useful to you, the chicken bone should be in your curiosities or on the floor it's so common, and the waterskin -- while useful -- is wasteful of space and should be replaced with a more efficient water flask.

Curiosities and food depends. Honestly food is probably going to be your biggest concern for the longest time. Wish bones and seers bones aren't really worth the precious inventory space.

I think that's the most sound advice I can give you.

Wear the vapntreyu. Carry the saw in your other hand (I'm assuming this is better than you can make out of bones from a bear you kill). Ditch the shield (they're easy to make and quality doesn't matter). Ditch the ink (useless), Ditch the fishing rod (easy to replace). Keep or ditch the bow and quiver based on 1) quality (60+) and 2) Marksmanship skill (60+)--anything less and it's easy to replace and you're going to be too slow and inaccurate aiming with it for hunting, anyway; you'd do better with a decent sling (q30-40+). Take a waterflask if available (only one inventory space). Take more seeds. A variety of everything is good and is one of the most important things to take--carrots, wheat, hemp, grapes, and poppy have priority. Spectacles are great! They boost your perception--always a priority. You could even ditch the bear-tooth talisman for the spectacles as you may be a bit before finding a spot to mine at and will have time to replace it yourself. Pick axe and shovel--a must! These tools will save you much effort, though if need be, the shovel can be ditched for more important items.

If you can, get a boat together with the biggest container you can build. Put what is NEEDED in it (tools and bones/dreams for a claim) and then fill it with curios. (Food is easily obtainable.) Get a spruce bed together and put it in the boat, too. Then, when you log out at night, make sure to have enough time to build a lean-to. Put the bed and chest in it, and go to sleep.

Other things to consider: if there's bars around, take a few of those (11 I believe is the number). It'll be helpful to build a metal plow (3 bars), meat grinder (4 bars), and anvil (4 bars) (priority in that order). Grab a smithy hammer if available.

Good point about the axe. Anything lower than q20 is just junk, though one is needed to keep yourself fed hunting while on the move. Gotta have a sharp tool! I'll agree on the wish bone if you have chicken coops.

Nice stuff. Did you get it from a claim? If so, you may not be long for this world.
