How to start mining?

Postby Nferno44 » Wed Jul 27, 2011 7:24 pm

i just made my first minehole and now i don't know what to do ...

Mining another tile while standing on a tile already mined without Mine Supports can cause cave-ins. Cave-ins drop a number of boulders around/on you, if they hit you they cause damage to you.

Does that mean i can mine only the walls without having a potential cave-in?

i just need a few nuggets for some supporters and i don't want to risk my character

It's not so much an abuse, but more like Natural supports. I know how the pattern works, I use it myself, but I'm a little unconcentrated right now, so wait to get confirmation from others before following my guide there! :D

Some images I lifted off the russian boards.
Snaking/Corkscrew Technique
Efficient Support Placement

Maybe someone else will post the actual requirements for causing a cave-in. I'm not clear on what they are.

PS how do I get the forum to resize my images using the [img] tags?

I have successfully mined a corkscrew like that, to make a much longer corkscrew. What I haven't done is take out those middle squares - my corkscrew all goes two up, two left, two up, two right, repeat.

While my village was preparing to build a mine, one very dedicated person went full trad and prayed for metal. He got a mine support as soon as he had a square mined to put it on :)

I realize you want other people's opinions and not more of mine :P

This has discussion about the snake pattern and cave-ins.
This has discussion regarding how to turn a snake tunnel.

Here are some other links on mining topics that may be interesting/useful:
Link -- Link -- Link -- Link -- Link

Edit: To make me less of a douche.

Then don't read them. There are plenty of us that will provide the first few pointers. Another option: make a mining guide and put in the wiki or put a link in the wiki to the forum guide. Also, make your links a bit clearer. Nobody really wants to click to random articles that aren't any more helpful. The first two were good.

Conclusion: Don't be a douche by crapping in other people's threads.

Now, back on topic:

In case you don't want to figure out where in all that linkage the important points are...

The snaking mining is an intended mechanic. As long as you stick to that pattern, it should work. However, there is still a rare chance it can cause a cave-in. Don't try to mine out the central tiles before putting a support in. It will eventually cause a cave-in. The person could have just started at the bottom and mined out the three tiles and not had an issue.

The rules have never been established for what will and won't cause a cave-in. It's just a matter of percentages that only Jorb and Loftar know. Also, remember that this is an alpha release, so the rules could change at any time.

Projeer: use the code block to post blocks of characters like this:

Code: Select all
XXX_X
XXX_X
X___X
X_XXX

See how it lines up nicely? ;)
