character is gone

I haven't been playing for a few days and when I log in there is no option to pick a character. Is my character dead?

Yeah, probably. Although that only happens if you leave scents.

Yes. I left a scent of theft when I took my things back from some Russian thieves. But I don't think they killed me because they had the chance to but they let me go. And my hearth is at the back of a cave miles away from the scent anyway.

Doesn't matter. They could still track you down and kill you for leaving a theft scent. Why attack you when you're online when they can just wait for you to log and then summon you when you can't fight back? You're only safe after the scent expires, even if you live in the back of a cave on the opposite side of the map.
