Let's say I build a wooden palisade with one gate. Would I be able to add another gate later by destroying a section of my wall? Right now I'm in a semi-dangerous area and I want to set up my protection quickly, but I'd like to add other sections to my base later on.

in W3 you could. when u destroyed a section(either through decay or attack) you could rebuild it. and there was an option to put in a cornerpost

It alsways helped me to "learn" on the roundpole fences, as the palli had the same mechanics, per say
