Safe trading

I see that there are many threads in dwarves and theifs, but I don't see how I could possibly trade with them since they can just mug me and take my items easily. Do any of you know safe methods of trading that won't get me mugged?

Welcome to a reputation based market. Trade with established individuals and villages who have a long history of not screwing people over!
Always scope the area out first if it's in the open and keep x-ray on if you don't have modified graphics. Max-zoom to make sure the area is safe.

When possible, set the trade up to be at a neutral ground, like a mutually friendly village. Like nople was in w3.
